Reply:I can only think of one, well probably three or four actually, but they were all called QUINN. However I seem to remember a big, dirty, hulking centre-half who went by the name of QUASIMOTO back in the 60's........or was that just what fans of other teams nicknamed him?.......memory's not quite what it used to be ......

Given that the names of several Celtic deities come from the Brythonic language family?
And given that in the Modern Brythonic tongues (Breton, Cornish %26amp; Welsh) there is no "soft C" sound. Would It be fitting in ritual circumstances to pronounce the names of deities such as Cernunnos, Ceridwen, and Latinized deities such as Cocidius, Condatis %26amp; Clota with a "K" sound?
Even her in the Uk I`ve heard several pagans call upon "Seridwen".....
Given that the names of several Celtic deities come from the Brythonic language family?
"Seridwen"? ::shudders:: Dear my.
Definitely the hard "K" sound for the native names. Latinized names, you might stumble across some that've been softened, but I'd have to say that the hard sound is a good rule of thumb.
Reply:I've (thankfully) never heard anyone call her Seridwen. The hard K is not only acceptable but correct for Ceridwen and Cernunnos. (I'm not familiar with the other three). Just like its kelt, not selt, no matter what the American basketbal team (the Boston Celtics) thinks.
Reply:DIRECTED to the first responder (I wouldn't even repeat their name, probably doesn't even have a passport!)

How did Celtic's founding fathers manage to get people to pronounce the name as Sel-tic rather than Keltic?
Before they were founded, no such pronunciation existed as far as I'm aware. Everyone knew the word as "Keltic", so do you think it was difficult to have the name known as "Sell-tick"? And what was the thinking behind this anyway? It's something I've never seen mentioned in any Celtic history book.
Now, virtually every sports club with "Celtic" in their name have it pronounced the same way. The original Celtic started a bit of a trend!
How did Celtic's founding fathers manage to get people to pronounce the name as Sel-tic rather than Keltic?
The words "Celt" and "Celtic" were not used in the English language until the 1700s, and both pronunciations are acceptable, though the word itself derives from the Greek "Keltoi", which makes the hard pronunciation more historical. It then became "Celtus" in Latin.
"Celtic" has been pronounced both ways since the Latin language first started using the "soft c". In the Latin of the Roman empire, the letter C was always pronounced as a K and never as an S, being exactly equivalent to the Greek kappa. After the Catholic Church took over the empire, pronunciation began to change. English inherited both ways to pronounce a letter C, depending partially on position in the word and partially on local dialect.
There is little evidence that the peoples now referred to as Celtic ever called themselves such before the 1700s, and there is no Celtic word (in Gaelic, Welsh, Breton, Cornish, etc) that explicitly sounds like or means "Celtic".
Reply:A B C D not A B K D.
Perhaps it is better to ask "Why Keltic?"

Name this book: A british man is transported to a celtic world, becomes king, dies, wakes up back in London?
So this man has a boring life and goes out into the countryside with his friend. They find a fairy mound and he walks around it three times then enters a hole in it. He is transported to a celtic world in the middle of a battlefield. One side takes him hostage and he learns their language and eventually becomes their king. He marries a queen and they live happily, but then an attack happens and she dies, then he eventually dies and wakes up back in London. I would really like to remember the name of this book, it was amazing and I'd like to read it again. Thank you.

Need baby name starting w/ B or J. Like UNIQUE, nature, Celtic, Greek, etc...like Willow, Isis, River, Terryn?
My boyfriend and I are discussing baby names. I really like UNIQUE names. I have some favorites, but none that fall within the letters I need (jewish traditions). I'm lookinf for boys or girls names, that start with B, for my mom, and J, for my dad. I LOVE nature names, such as fox, but my boyfriends last name is Cox, so it gets quite tricky! I also like willow, scarlett, (again...scarlett cox? um, no...), river, meadow, Boelynn, Josslynn, but I can't find a unique name that he likes. He keeps shooting them all down! Help me please, I need some fresh ideas!!! Thanks everyone =)

Reply:Well for some nature names you could do briar, jasmine or jade for a girl, or barker for a boy. Or you could make jade into jaden for a boy. I like the name jensen too or blake. Brittany, brenna, blair, bridget or brianna are celtic girl names. Brennan, brice or blaine are celtic boy names. Brooke or brooklyn are nature names meaning water or stream. Brielle, breckan, or jaxon (unique way of spelling it). I don't know what your parents names are but you could possibly combine the two to create a unique name of your own.

Reply:Bariah- means excellence girls name

Hey,Celtic, Rangers,Football fans there is an alternative to all this CHILDISH NAME CALLING and HATRED ,sure!?
First-cowardly bullies hunt in packs, HEROES-stand alone, You laughingly call yourselves Christians,(some do)and use your denominational differences,to HATE;injure and kill eachother! JESUS commanded us to LOVE ONE ANOTHER,forgive one another ,we are supposed to be HIS AMBASSADORS, to show a sick world GODS LOVE.(there is a spiritual enemy, who comes but to Kill,Steal and Destroy,he is real and in complete opposition to Christ he is the devil) All you do is glorify him with your behaviour! And did you but know it,. you support his TEAM.Resist these hate-filled urges, be proud to be Scottish, Irish, Celts -dont degrade and destroy one another. GOD LOVES each and every one of you,JESUS died to wash away all your sins to give you all a fighting chance to survive and make it to eternity in a better place than HELL. HE is The Giver of LIFE and The PRINCE of P E A C E (which part of that do you not understand) Channel all that negative hatred and childish behaviour,You great WARRIOR PEOPLE
Hey,Celtic, Rangers,Football fans there is an alternative to all this CHILDISH NAME CALLING and HATRED ,sure!?
i feel sorry for scotland,
Reply:They deserve each other.
Reply:I could be wrong but I've been reading up an following this issue for a while.
I've talked to fans that say things like "That proddy/catholic ba**ard" and then that same person say the conflict between Rangers and Celtic fans have nothing to do with religion. Sounds contradicting, I know, but they're just interchangeable words sort to speak.
I think, generally speaking, the fans really don't care what religion a person claims. The word "Catholic" and "Protestant" are just labels in the Old Firm culture. Odds are if you're a proddy then you're a Rangers fan and thus a "loyalist pig" and if you're a Catholic then odds are you're a Celtic fan and thus "Fenian scum" (Even though both teams are based in Scotland)
Example. If you're a Protestant Rangers fans then you'll have a hard time trusting a Catholic as you'll automatically assume they're a Celtic fan and thus you're mortal enemy. And visa versa
Of course, there are fans out there that do hate others based on religion but it's hard to distinguish them between the rest who just like to taunt the other team.
Basically, the whole rivalry isn't about faith. It's about politics, history, and culture.
As I said, I could be wrong so feel free to correct me. Any Rangers or Celtic fan out there is free to contact me as I'm open to learning.

Names of good celtic bands that sing traditional music?
I have been listening to Arcona Reel Band, and various compilations of Celtic music, but I would like to learn more about specific bands, especially of vocal traditional music, but some instrumental reels/jigs, etc. mixed in are great too! Any recommendations? Thanks!
Names of good celtic bands that sing traditional music?
Seamus Eagan, Altan, Clannad, Mary Jane Lamond, Solas, Loreena McKennitt, The Bridies, Mary Black and Old Blind Dogs are good, I like Merry Wives of Windsor, and my favorite, Dougie MacLean.
Check out Celtic Tides. It's a CD by Putamayo, it's got most of these bands on it. Great way to get familiar with the genre :)

How did Celtic's founding fathers manage to get the name pronounced as "Sell-tick" rather than "Kell-tick"?
This pronunciation didn't exist as far as I know, the word was universally known as "Kell-tick", so was it difficult for the people in charge to assert this? And what was the thinking behind the unique pronunciation anyway? Now virtually all sports clubs with "Celtic" in their name have it pronounced "Sell-tick" too. There's nothing in any Celtic history book I've read regarding this subject.
How did Celtic's founding fathers manage to get the name pronounced as "Sell-tick" rather than "Kell-tick"?
"Why is Celtic pronounced Seltic rather than Keltic, as it is in every other context?"
A tricky one this. Ed Mortimer started us off. "The answer is simple," he said. "We are wrong to pronounce the word Keltic. It's one of those words where the pronunciation has changed for some reason in one context but not in others. Following the general rule that 'c' followed by 'e' or 'i' is pronounced as an 's', we have Seltik, as in the football club. The same pronunciation used to apply to the adjective describing the ancient inhabitants of the western fringes of Europe, including parts of modern-day Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, France and Spain. The 's' pronunciation still applies in French, Breton and Galician - but for some reason English has changed to the keltic variant. Put simply, the football club pronunciation is the right one."
Graeme Gardiner offered an alternative view. "Celtic were founded in 1888 to benefit the Irish immigrant population of Glasgow's east end. The name Celtic was chosen to reflect the common roots of the Scots and Irish, who were on the receiving end of considerable sectarian prejudice. Unfortunately the name wasn't used much outside academic circles and was simply mispronounced by the local population. Of course the de facto pronunciation among the faithful is Sellick."
However, the truth, if it is to be had, seemed to be that both pronunciations are ostensibly correct, with Keltic having become the more accepted usage only in the last 30 years. Celtic, having been formed in the last century, naturally retained the Seltic pronunciation. This from the Medieval Scotland website, which a number of readers kindly pointed out:
"The reason the Boston Celtics and Glasgow Celtic and all those other sports teams founded around 1900 (give or take a couple decades) pronounce their names Seltic is not because they were founded by ignorant folk who didn't know any better, but because they spoke English and did know the proper pronunciation of the English word 'Celtic'.
"So what happened? Well, any number of things might explain why the in-crowd pronunciation shifted to Keltic (such as the German influence on Celtic studies, which was strong in the 19th- and early 20th-centuries) but the upshot is that it is now fashionable - almost obligatory - in certain circles to pronounce the word with a K sound rather than the original S sound. In fact, in certain circles (both in and out of academia) it is something of a litmus test - if you don't use the K sound, it will be assumed you are not knowledgeable about things Celtic. But the one and only reason Keltic is now one of the correct pronunciations of the word is because that is how many educated people pronounce it. That is the only logic in the Keltic pronunciation's favour. The standard rules of English, the rules of language, long use and practice, all argue in favour of Seltic, not Keltic. But it still remains that Seltic is a long-established, traditional pronunciation of the word in English. There is absolutely nothing wrong with pronouncing Celtic as Seltic."
Reply:There are a few exceptions, but the general rule of the English language today is that ce and ci are pronounced with the soft c sound, whereas ca,co and cu have the hard c sound. So your question should be,why is Celtic,as in the ethnic group, pronounced with a hard c sound? And since it is,as to how the football club reversed this,I have no idea.
Reply:Well celtic basketball team pronounce it Kel-tic. Maybe it wasn't meant to be a thing done on purpose, Maybe fans just prounced it this way when they said it or sounded that way considering irish and scottish accents make a lot of words sound different without meaning too.
Btw all this is just a random guess. I've always called celtic celtic and even when I was younger I called kel-tic(celtic basketball team celtic like sel-tic coz I couldn't pronounce my ks at that point)
This is just a guess I don't know

The Maya supreme god, to whom the Maya attributed many functions. Not only was he a god of the four elements, he was also a creator god and the god of resurrection and reincarnation. He originated from Toltec myth, where he was a divine hero who taught the Toltecs laws, fishing, healing, the calendar, and agriculture. He emerged from the ocean, and disappeared in it afterwards.
His name means "the feathered serpent", and the Aztec merged him with their Quetzalcoatl. His attributes, each representing one element, are a maize-ear (earth), a fish (water), lizard (fire), and vulture (air). He is the so-called 'God B'.
Mama Allpa
by Micha F. Lindemans
The harvest and earth goddess from Inca mythology. She was usually portrayed with many breasts, which indicates fertility and the nourishing powers of the earth.
Athena
by Ryan Tuccinardi
Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, war, the arts, industry, justice and skill. She was the favorite child of Zeus. She had sprung fully grown out of her father's head. Her mother was Metis, goddess of wisdom and Zeus' first wife. In fear that Metis would bear a son mightier than himself. Zeus swallowed her and she began to make a robe and helmet for her daughter. The hammering of the helmet caused Zeus great pain in the form of headaches and he cried out in agony. Skilled Hephaestus ran to his father and split his skull open and from it emerged Athena, fully grown and wearing her mother's robe and helmet. She is the virgin mother of Erichthnonius.
Athena and her uncle Poseidon were both very fond of a certain city in Greece. Both of them claimed the city and it was decided that the one that could give the finest gift should have it. Leading a procession of citizens, the two gods mounted the Acropolis. Poseidon struck the side of the cliff with his trident and a spring welled up. The people marveled, but the water was as salty as Poseidon's sea and it was not very useful. Athena's gift was an olive tree, which was better because it gave the people food, oil and wood. Athena named her city Athens.
Athena's companion was the goddess of victory, Nike, and her usual attribute is the owl. Athena possessed the Aegis.
Venus
by Micha F. Lindemans
The Roman goddess of love and beauty, but originally a vegetation goddess and patroness of gardens and vineyards. Later, under Greek influence, she was equated with Aphrodite and assumed many of her aspects. Her cult originated from Ardea and Lavinium in Latium. The oldest temple known of Venus dates back to 293 BCE, and was inaugurated on August 18. Later, on this date the Vinalia Rustica was observed. A second festival, that of the Veneralia, was celebrated on April 1 in honor of Venus Verticordia, who later became the protector against vice. Her temple was built in 114 BCE. After the Roman defeat near Lake Trasum in 215 BCE, a temple was built on the Capitol for Venus Erycina. This temple was officially opened on April 23, and a festival, the Vinalia Priora, was instituted to celebrate the occasion.
Venus is the daughter of Jupiter, and some of her lovers include Mars and Vulcan, modeled on the affairs of Aphrodite. Venus' importance rose, and that of her cult, through the influence of several Roman political leaders. The dictator Sulla made her his patroness, and both Julius Caesar and the emperor Augustus named her the ancestor of their (Julian) family: the 'gens Julia' was Aeneas, son of Venus and the mortal Anchises. Ceasar introduced the cult of Venus Genetrix, the goddess of motherhood and marriage, and built a temple for her in 46 BCE. She was also honored in the temple of Mars Ultor. The last great temple of Venus was built by the emperor Hadrianus near the Colusseum in 135 CE.
Roman statues and portraits of Venus are usually identical to the Greek representations of Aphrodite.
Brigid
by Lisa Spindler
Name Cognates: Breo Saighead, Brid, Brighid [Eriu], Brigindo, Brigandu [Gaul], Brigan, Brigantia, Brigantis [Briton], Bride [Alba].
Breo Saighead, or the "Fiery Arrow or Power," is a Celtic three-fold goddess, the daughter of The Dagda, and the wife of Bres. Known by many names, Brighid's three aspects are (1) Fire of Inspiration as patroness of poetry, (2) Fire of the Hearth, as patroness of healing and fertility, and (3) Fire of the Forge, as patroness of smithcraft and martial arts. She is mother to the craftsmen. Sons of Tuireann: Creidhne, Luchtaine and Giobhniu.
Excalibur, King Arthur's sword, was forged by the Lady of the Lake, a figure sometimes associated with Brighid because of her fire and forgery aspect. Like the Arthurian Avalon, or "Isle of Apples," Brigid possessed an apple orchard in the Otherworld to which bees traveled to obtain it's magickal nectar.
Brigid, which means "one who exaults herself," is Goddess of the Sacred Flame of Kildare (derived from "Cill Dara," which means "church of the oak") and often is considered to be the White Maiden aspect of the Triple Goddess. She was Christianized as the "foster-mother" of Jesus Christ, and called St. Brigit, the daughter of the Druid Dougal the Brown. She sometimes also is associated with the Romano-Celtic goddess Aquae-Sulis in Bathe.
Brighid's festival is Imbolc, celebrated on or around February 1 when she ushers Spring to the land after The Cailleach's Winter reign. This mid-Winter feast commences as the ewes begin to lactate and is the start of the new agricultural cycle. During this time Brigid personifies a bride, virgin or maiden aspect and is the protectoress of women in childbirth. Imbolc also is known as Oimelc, Brigid, Candlemas, or even in America as Groundhog Day.
As the foundation for the American Groundhog Day, Brigid's snake comes out of its mound in which it hibernates and its behavior is said to determine the length of the remaining Winter.
Gailleach, or White Lady, drank from the ancient Well of Youth at dawn. In that instant, she was transformed into her Maiden aspect, the young goddess called Brigid. Wells were considered to be sacred because they arose from oimbelc (literally "in the belly"), or womb of Mother Earth.
Because of her Fire of Inspiration and her connection to the apple and oak trees, Brighid often is considered the patroness of the Druids.

Reply:I dont think Kobe truly hates the celtics, even if he does, what does this mean that it was fate for him to one day be a celtic? or that its fate for him to lose to the celtics? haha
Reply:I don't really think Kobe hates the Celtics, since Celtics only made it to the Finals once in 23 years. I mean do Lakers fans really hate the Celtics before the Finals? I didn't really give a **** about them as long as I can remember until last year.
Reply:It's kinda weird, but it doesn't matter.
The name "Hardaway"'s origin might relate to homosexuals, but that doesn't mean anything, does it?
Reply:Intresting

Why are Celtic needing to take players on loan if they are so rich, they should change there name to ........?
the borrowers........small people with small ambitions
Why are Celtic needing to take players on loan if they are so rich, they should change there name to ........?
so its the borrowers versus the renters,eh.why spend lots when u dont need to.win the league aint gonna be hard is it.
Reply:Taking players on loan lets u look at them in our league. If they fit in well (Larsson), or if they can't handle any aspect of our strange, lovely little league (Rafael Scheidt anyone?). So it's always worth asking for loan 1st, then if u still want them, to make it permanent.
Reply:What makes you think they are so rich? Compared to who ...Aberdeen, Hearts, Forfar Athletic, St.Mirren (oops!)Inverness (oops again!), Rangers?....what does that prove? They're still only going to be small fry in a even smaller pool.
Reply:why pay when you can borrow....another team pays for rubbish ....
Reply:Yes lets change our name but not to the borrowers. I'd rather we were called The Prudent Solvent Club, you know the ones who own their own stadium, the ones who own their own 5 star training complex, the ones who are financially stable and will be for years. It is a good job we have such astute financial people in charge of our business affairs because we have these neighbours across the city called Renters and they are in terrible debt. This is due mainly to buying duds and winning nothing for a few years. They are the all flash and no cash kind of neighbours and I fear they will be thrown out of their rented accommodation soon if they don't pay up. I see the bailiffs knocking on the door and the old guy stumped up a bucket full of money but it was not enough.
I know we will never go down that road, thank God.
Reply:Yip Hoops has it in the bag ,in this world doing business is mostly about seeing how far you can rip the pish(sorry for the poor grammar its for Katies benefit) but there is one thing that,s a complete fact,Celtic have money and plenty of it, but even so i,m sure you would agree its good business to be prudent with your budget,no matter who you are we all have one.bite bite.Merry Christmas.
Reply:2 c if players r worth buying it's called good business but that would b above ur head eh!!!

Do you like the following boys celtic names Lachlan, Tadhg (pronounced Tiger without the r)?
tadhg is just going to lead to the poor kid having to explain how to pronounce his name to everyone. lachlan is at least easy to take a stab at, but before you explained how to pronounce tadhg, i was guessing all sorts of way off stuff.
Do you like the following boys celtic names Lachlan, Tadhg (pronounced Tiger without the r)?
Normally I don't like unpronounceable spellings but Celtic and Welsh names deserve an exception because they are real and they are fun. I think Tadhg is cool. An American kid with that name will face a lifetime of spelling and respelling and having it spelled wrong on diplomas and mail and stuff. But so what. And it isn't hard to explain that it sounds like tiger without the R. Most people would remember that fairly easily. I would consider that spelling unforgivable if somebody just made it up to be unique but as a name with some history behind it it's cool and worth the effort it will take to live with it.
Reply:I like them unless you live in America
Reply:No way%26gt; sorry, but, i dont like them.

Does anyone out there know Celtic music? I''m trying to find out the name of a particular song.?
It was used in the television series " Highlander" at the end of the episode titled "Not To Be", and also in the Highlander movie "Endgame". I'd love to know what it's called and who sings it. I don't think it's Enya because the range is higher.

I need a name for an wise old man (possibly fae, folklore, celtic etc)...?
Androcles, Barnabas, Dorian, Simon.
Androcles is Greek for "the glory of man."
Barnabas is German for "son of a prophet."
Dorian is from the novel "The Portrait of Dorian Gray."
Simon is Biblical, meaning "He has heard."
Just some I thought of off the top of my head. Dorian and Simon are my faves. :)
Reply:"Fromain, was a wise old man who lived near the village of Maerhaven. Many of the townsfolk had come to him for years to aid in the healing of small medicinal things, to those which required more of a magical touch. It was rumored that he had learned his craft from the elders in the Woods of Elrich. Others said he was never young and was some sort of magical being all together..."
I dunno I just wrote this...maybe it'll help.

Whats a good name for a cruise newsletter. its celtic cruise?
The cruiseline is called Celtic Cruise, I'd go with Celtic Knots (nautical mile)
1 international knot =
1 nautical mile per hour (exactly),
1.852 kilometres per hour (exactly),[4]
0.514 meters per second,
1.15077945 miles per hour (approximately).

Baby name suggestions for 2nd daughter... "Celtic" background.?
My first daughter is 2 and her name is Fiona Leigh, our last name is Miller. (Not worried about putting that up here since there are about a million people with that last name!) Looking for first and middle names, not out of left field but not crazy about the Amanda %26amp; Jessica's and such... (No offense if this is your name, I just meant nothing crazy popular where she would have 3 other girls by her name in her class!)

Please help me find the name of a mystery Celtic song I heard yesterday! ?
I was driving and this song came on that made me weep. I just lost my mother this week and it so fit into what I was feeling. It was like she was singing to me through the radio. I don't know which radio station, I had it on "random." (Kicking myself now.) Lyrics include "you will hear it in my song", "I have watched you grow" %26amp; "you won't see me, you won't feel me." (This may not be exact.) Also, something about courage. It was a woman singing. I think it was Celtic but I could be wrong. I Googled it 10 different ways but no luck. Please help...I must find this song!!
Please help me find the name of a mystery Celtic song I heard yesterday! ?
Anne Murray "You Won't See Me"
When I call you up, your lines engaged
I have had enough, so act your age
We have lost the time that was so hard to find
And I will lose my mind, if you won鈥檛 see me
You won鈥檛 see me.
I don鈥檛 know why you should want to hide
But I can鈥檛 get through, my hands are tied
I won鈥檛 want to stay, I don鈥檛 have much to say
But I can turn away if you won鈥檛 see me
You won鈥檛 see me.
Time after time you refuse to even listen
I wouldn鈥檛 mind if I knew what I was missin鈥?
Though the days are few, they鈥檙e filled with tears
And since I lost you, it feels like years
Yes, it seems so long since you鈥檝e been gone
And I just can鈥檛 go on, if you won鈥檛 see me
You won鈥檛 see me.
Time after time you refuse to even listen
I wouldn鈥檛 mind if I knew what I was missin'.

Name the two scottish players to score against Celtic in european competition.?
Billy Bremner of Leeds in 1970 is the only one I can find, assuming you're not counting og's (there's been quite a few of those over the years by Scottish Celts!)
I've went through all the games against English, Welsh and Irish opposition and there wasn't another Scottish scorer, nor did Murdo MacLeod score against us for Dortmund.
Reply:Caldwell and McManus !!!!
Reply:Maybe a Liverpool Player? Yeats or St John?
Reply:Forest player prob?

Name all the war movies released after 1990 that contained celtic music.?
I remember there was a war movie, i think american war of independence or the civil war. It had a haunting celtic music. What is the name of that movie ?
Name all the war movies released after 1990 that contained celtic music.?
To me, the only film that I recall would be the "The Last of the Mohicans" (1992 - French and Indian War). However, the entire score had a Celtic 'feel' to it.
Reply:I heard some strange Scottish song with bagpipes playing in We Were Soldiers with Mel Gibson.
Reply:One(or best one!)is Brave Hurt of Mel Gibson
Reply:Why do we have to do that? I got better things to do and, frankly, who gives a crap?

What would the Celtic ramifications of naming my daughter Leanan Sidhe (pronounced lan-awn-shee) be?
My husband and I love the name, but due to the mixed results I've been finding in my research, we are concerned that the name might be offensive to the Irish/Celtic culture. Does anyone know more about this name?
What would the Celtic ramifications of naming my daughter Leanan Sidhe (pronounced lan-awn-shee) be?
I think it is a wonderful name. I wouldn't mind being called Leanan Sidhe! Here is some information about the name.
"Leanan Sidhe is often quoted as meaning "the fairy mistress" or the "fairy sweetheart". She is a the famous Celtic muse with such a dark and unearthly beauty that her lover was often distraught with longing and suffering for her absence. In legend, the Leanan Sidhe often takes an artist for a lover, hence the title "the fairy sweetheart". It is said that her lover gives her the vital depth of emotion that she craves and she in turn inspires his genius.
He is the artist, who lost without his inspiration, unable to create his works of art and compositions of song, suffers in a deep depression and sometimes commits suicide or gives up his creative work in despair. Yet an artist who has lost the connection to his muse has failed to honor and nurture the gift he has been given. The role of the artist in the loss of his muse is not often considered or understood. The self destructive nature of many inspired artists probably lent itself to the misconception that she was evil and dangerous. Evil is not darkness, for darkness she is, and she can also be dangerous and destructive. When her gift is honored and nurtured, she shines as a luminous light in the darkness. For those who understand her true nature, who do not idolize or fear her, she is a sliver of moonlight in the blackest night.
The most common and widespread myth attached to Leanan Sidhe is that she is a vampirish spirit who attaches herself to one man. To this man, an artist or poet, she appears irresistibly beautiful, and if he is seduced by her, he is ruined body and soul. This misunderstanding is not in keeping with her original purpose and is only as recent as Medieval Scotland when she was associated with the Christian superstition of the succubi. It was popularized in print by the poet W.B. Yeats who claimed that she was a "blood sucking vampire" This was a dramatic touch, but is more likely a symptom of the Victorian obsession with succubi along with a bit of poetic license. Unfortunately, most research on the subject of Leanan Sidhe goes back no farther than the account Yeats held of her. There is a rich and enduring history and deeper meaning to the name Leanan Sidhe that is much more interesting than the popular vampire fantasies."
Reply:Did you read Cat Magick? It deals with the Leanan Sidhe. It won't answer the question you have, but it is a good fiction book.
I would say, go ahead, what is the harm, but my cat Loki sure lived up to his name! How about if you use the name, but use a different spelling?
I wish I could be more help, but good luck with the bundle of joy!
Reply:S铆dhe (IPA [蕛i藧], shee, modern Irish: s铆; Scottish Gaelic: s矛th) is an Irish and Scottish Gaelic word referring first to earthen mounds that were thought to be home to a supernatural race related to the fey and elves of other traditions, and later to these inhabitants themselves. The S铆dhe or S矛th are variously believed to be the ancestors, the spirits of nature, or the goddesses and gods themselves.
Many see the S铆dhe as later, literary versions of the Tuatha D茅 Danann (the gods and deified heroes of Irish mythology). In folk belief and practice, the S铆dhe are often propitiated with offerings, and care is taken not to anger them. They are often spoken of with euphemisms such as "The Good Neighbors", "The Fair Folk", "The Gentry", or simply "The Folk", in the hope that if humans consider them to be kind, they are more likely to be so. In this vein, the most common names for them, Aes S铆dhe, Daoine S铆dhe and Duine S矛th mean, literally, "People of Peace".
I think the name is wonderful.

Reply:There are some people who think naming a child Jesus is a great tribute and others who are mortally offended. She is your daughter. If you love the name, use it. She may go through a short phase where she doesn't like it but if you teach her to be proud, she'll most likely love it as an adult.
Your right that a few people may be offended and even more may roll their eyes at you. Naming your child after such an important faerie should bring your child lots of luck, and mischief.
I love the name and am glad you are putting time into making sure it is the right one. As soon as your daughter is born, you will know for sure.
Reply:I think the Irish and Celtics would be flattered that you chose that name for your beautiful daughter. Everyone likes to have their beliefs commemerated.
Reply:People can be offended by anything.
If you like the name; give her that name. It IS YOUR choice and not theirs.
Reply:I doubt there will be many "Celtic" ramifications, but you should consider these:
--People will never pronounce her name correctly. Most people don't even know how to pronounce "Celt." (Think of the Boston team)
--She will likley be teased a great deal about her name.
--There is no good short version of the name.
--Her name will often be mispelled, both in school and business.
--She may grow up to be a Renaissance Faire junkie.
On the other hand:
--People name their kids after archangels and saints, so it can be argued that it not's disrespectful.
--If she is raised to be proud of her different name, she may feel unique and special.
--Perhaps the Sidhe will bless her.
--It beats the crappy names that celebrities give their kids!

My last girlfriend always said she wanted a boy, naming him Ayden. It's a great name, because in Gaelic it means, "little fire". How sweet is that? :)

Reply:Wow, I'm so proud of you. Not only are you a loving mother of so many children but you have such a good and traditional sense in naming them.
My last girlfriend always said she wanted a boy, naming him Ayden. It's a great name, because in Gaelic it means, "little fire". How sweet is that? :)
