i wouldnt suggest anything the child will grow out of and you would be surprise how much you want a specific name and then when he or she makes entrance, the name doesn't fit.
Reply:Get a baby name book and look at the origins of the names, and circle all the ones that are old english or celtic. Then you can pick the ones you like from those. The books costs like 5-11 bucks. Its a good investment.

According to them, Rowan is a girl's name though. Guess there is no accounting for Rowan Atkinson then. My personal favorites are Liam (it means "determined guardian"), Nolan (it means "champion"), or Neil (also means champion...and it's my hubby's name ;) ) Best wishes!

I'm trying to decide on a unique, but pronounceable, Irish/Celtic boys name. I don't like trendy or common names, but my last name is difficult, so the first name must be easy to say. My first son is Cormac.

Avalbane -Is both a Celtic "A" name, and it numerically reduces to the number 4; it's also rather original %26amp; unusual. And because it contains the word "bane", it has that particular Wiccan sound/feel to it, too, I think (ie. Definitely the hard "K" sound for the native names. Latinized names, you might stumble across some that've been softened, but I'd have to say that the hard sound is a good rule of thumb.
Reply:I've (thankfully) never heard anyone call her Seridwen. The hard K is not only acceptable but correct for Ceridwen and Cernunnos. (I'm not familiar with the other three). Just like its kelt, not selt, no matter what the American basketbal team (the Boston Celtics) thinks.

Before they were founded, no such pronunciation existed as far as I'm aware. Everyone knew the word as "Keltic", so do you think it was difficult to have the name known as "Sell-tick"? And what was the thinking behind this anyway? It's something I've never seen mentioned in any Celtic history book.

Now, virtually every sports club with "Celtic" in their name have it pronounced the same way. The original Celtic started a bit of a trend!

How did Celtic's founding fathers manage to get people to pronounce the name as Sel-tic rather than Keltic?
The words "Celt" and "Celtic" were not used in the English language until the 1700s, and both pronunciations are acceptable, though the word itself derives from the Greek "Keltoi", which makes the hard pronunciation more historical. It then became "Celtus" in Latin.

"Celtic" has been pronounced both ways since the Latin language first started using the "soft c". In the Latin of the Roman empire, the letter C was always pronounced as a K and never as an S, being exactly equivalent to the Greek kappa. After the Catholic Church took over the empire, pronunciation began to change. English inherited both ways to pronounce a letter C, depending partially on position in the word and partially on local dialect.

There is little evidence that the peoples now referred to as Celtic ever called themselves such before the 1700s, and there is no Celtic word (in Gaelic, Welsh, Breton, Cornish, etc) that explicitly sounds like or means "Celtic".

So this man has a boring life and goes out into the countryside with his friend. They find a fairy mound and he walks around it three times then enters a hole in it. He is transported to a celtic world in the middle of a battlefield. One side takes him hostage and he learns their language and eventually becomes their king. He marries a queen and they live happily, but then an attack happens and she dies, then he eventually dies and wakes up back in London. I would really like to remember the name of this book, it was amazing and I'd like to read it again. Thank you.

My boyfriend and I are discussing baby names. I really like UNIQUE names. I have some favorites, but none that fall within the letters I need (jewish traditions). I'm lookinf for boys or girls names, that start with B, for my mom, and J, for my dad. I LOVE nature names, such as fox, but my boyfriends last name is Cox, so it gets quite tricky! I also like willow, scarlett, (again...scarlett cox? um, no...), river, meadow, Boelynn, Josslynn, but I can't find a unique name that he likes. He keeps shooting them all down! Reply:Well for some nature names you could do briar, jasmine or jade for a girl, or barker for a boy. Or you could make jade into jaden for a boy. I like the name jensen too or blake. Brittany, brenna, blair, bridget or brianna are celtic girl names. Brennan, brice or blaine are celtic boy names. Brooke or brooklyn are nature names meaning water or stream. Brielle, breckan, or jaxon (unique way of spelling it). I don't know what your parents names are but you could possibly combine the two to create a unique name of your own.

Reply:My last name is Cox too from my husband. I was careful too getting rid of my maiden middle name which was Eileen and replacing it with my maiden last name. Who would want to be Eileen Cox (I lean Cox!)

The names we were thinking about included several J names when naming my last child. Some of the boy names were Jeriah, Jahrell, Jaquin, Jaheim, Jamal, Jakeem. For girls we liked Jazmin, Jaleenah, Jaseniah, Jamaliah, Janelle, Jalissa.

I've talked to fans that say things like "That proddy/catholic ba**ard" and then that same person say the conflict between Rangers and Celtic fans have nothing to do with religion. Sounds contradicting, I know, but they're just interchangeable words sort to speak.

I think, generally speaking, the fans really don't care what religion a person claims. The word "Catholic" and "Protestant" are just labels in the Old Firm culture. Odds are if you're a proddy then you're a Rangers fan and thus a "loyalist pig" and if you're a Catholic then odds are you're a Celtic fan and thus "Fenian scum" (Even though both teams are based in Scotland)

Example. If you're a Protestant Rangers fans then you'll have a hard time trusting a Catholic as you'll automatically assume they're a Celtic fan and thus you're mortal enemy. And visa versa

Of course, there are fans out there that do hate others based on religion but it's hard to distinguish them between the rest who just like to taunt the other team.

Basically, the whole rivalry isn't about faith. It's about politics, history, and culture.

As I said, I could be wrong so feel free to correct me. Any Rangers or Celtic fan out there is free to contact me as I'm open to learning.

Check out Celtic Tides. It's a CD by Putamayo, it's got most of these bands on it. Great way to get familiar with the genre :)

This pronunciation didn't exist as far as I know, the word was universally known as "Kell-tick", so was it difficult for the people in charge to assert this? And what was the thinking behind the unique pronunciation anyway? Now virtually all sports clubs with "Celtic" in their name have it pronounced "Sell-tick" too. There's nothing in any Celtic history book I've read regarding this subject.

How did Celtic's founding fathers manage to get the name pronounced as "Sell-tick" rather than "Kell-tick"?
"Why is Celtic pronounced Seltic rather than Keltic, as it is in every other context?"

A tricky one this. Ed Mortimer started us off. "The answer is simple," he said. "We are wrong to pronounce the word Keltic. It's one of those words where the pronunciation has changed for some reason in one context but not in others. Following the general rule that 'c' followed by 'e' or 'i' is pronounced as an 's', we have Seltik, as in the football club. The same pronunciation used to apply to the adjective describing the ancient inhabitants of the western fringes of Europe, including parts of modern-day Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, France and Spain. The 's' pronunciation still applies in French, Breton and Galician - but for some reason English has changed to the keltic variant. Put simply, the football club pronunciation is the right one."

Graeme Gardiner offered an alternative view. "Celtic were founded in 1888 to benefit the Irish immigrant population of Glasgow's east end. The name Celtic was chosen to reflect the common roots of the Scots and Irish, who were on the receiving end of considerable sectarian prejudice. Unfortunately the name wasn't used much outside academic circles and was simply mispronounced by the local population. Of course the de facto pronunciation among the faithful is Sellick."

However, the truth, if it is to be had, seemed to be that both pronunciations are ostensibly correct, with Keltic having become the more accepted usage only in the last 30 years. Celtic, having been formed in the last century, naturally retained the Seltic pronunciation. This from the Medieval Scotland website, which a number of readers kindly pointed out:

"The reason the Boston Celtics and Glasgow Celtic and all those other sports teams founded around 1900 (give or take a couple decades) pronounce their names Seltic is not because they were founded by ignorant folk who didn't know any better, but because they spoke English and did know the proper pronunciation of the English word 'Celtic'.

"So what happened? Well, any number of things might explain why the in-crowd pronunciation shifted to Keltic (such as the German influence on Celtic studies, which was strong in the 19th- and early 20th-centuries) but the upshot is that it is now fashionable - almost obligatory - in certain circles to pronounce the word with a K sound rather than the original S sound. In fact, in certain circles (both in and out of academia) it is something of a litmus test - if you don't use the K sound, it will be assumed you are not knowledgeable about things Celtic. But the one and only reason Keltic is now one of the correct pronunciations of the word is because that is how many educated people pronounce it. That is the only logic in the Keltic pronunciation's favour. The standard rules of English, the rules of language, long use and practice, all argue in favour of Seltic, not Keltic. But it still remains that Seltic is a long-established, traditional pronunciation of the word in English. There is absolutely nothing wrong with pronouncing Celtic as Seltic."

Normally I don't like unpronounceable spellings but Celtic and Welsh names deserve an exception because they are real and they are fun. I think Tadhg is cool. An American kid with that name will face a lifetime of spelling and respelling and having it spelled wrong on diplomas and mail and stuff. But so what. And it isn't hard to explain that it sounds like tiger without the R. Most people would remember that fairly easily. I would consider that spelling unforgivable if somebody just made it up to be unique but as a name with some history behind it it's cool and worth the effort it will take to live with it.

Please help me find the name of a mystery Celtic song I heard yesterday! ?

I was driving and this song came on that made me weep. I just lost my mother this week and it so fit into what I was feeling. It was like she was singing to me through the radio. I don't know which radio station, I had it on "random." (Kicking myself now.) Lyrics include "you will hear it in my song", "I have watched you grow" %26amp; "you won't see me, you won't feel me." (This may not be exact.) Also, something about courage. It was a woman singing. I think it was Celtic but I could be wrong. I Googled it 10 different ways but no luck. Please help...I must find this song!!

Billy Bremner of Leeds in 1970 is the only one I can find, assuming you're not counting og's (there's been quite a few of those over the years by Scottish Celts!)

I've went through all the games against English, Welsh and Irish opposition and there wasn't another Scottish scorer, nor did Murdo MacLeod score against us for Dortmund.

My husband and I love the name, but due to the mixed results I've been finding in my research, we are concerned that the name might be offensive to the Irish/Celtic culture. Does anyone know more about this name?

I think it is a wonderful name. I wouldn't mind being called Leanan Sidhe! Here is some information about the name.

"Leanan Sidhe is often quoted as meaning "the fairy mistress" or the "fairy sweetheart". She is a the famous Celtic muse with such a dark and unearthly beauty that her lover was often distraught with longing and suffering for her absence. In legend, the Leanan Sidhe often takes an artist for a lover, hence the title "the fairy sweetheart". It is said that her lover gives her the vital depth of emotion that she craves and she in turn inspires his genius.

He is the artist, who lost without his inspiration, unable to create his works of art and compositions of song, suffers in a deep depression and sometimes commits suicide or gives up his creative work in despair. Yet an artist who has lost the connection to his muse has failed to honor and nurture the gift he has been given. The role of the artist in the loss of his muse is not often considered or understood. The self destructive nature of many inspired artists probably lent itself to the misconception that she was evil and dangerous. Reply:Did you read Cat Magick? It deals with the Leanan Sidhe. It won't answer the question you have, but it is a good fiction book.

Reply:There are some people who think naming a child Jesus is a great tribute and others who are mortally offended. She is your daughter. If you love the name, use it. She may go through a short phase where she doesn't like it but if you teach her to be proud, she'll most likely love it as an adult.

Your right that a few people may be offended and even more may roll their eyes at you. Naming your child after such an important faerie should bring your child lots of luck, and mischief.

--People will never pronounce her name correctly. Most people don't even know how to pronounce "Celt." (Think of the Boston team)

--She will likley be teased a great deal about her name.

--There is no good short version of the name.

--Her name will often be mispelled, both in school and business.

--She may grow up to be a Renaissance Faire junkie.

On the other hand:

--People name their kids after archangels and saints, so it can be argued that it not's disrespectful.

--If she is raised to be proud of her different name, she may feel unique and special.

--Perhaps the Sidhe will bless her.

--It beats the crappy names that celebrities give their kids!

As for why Asatru use Heathen, I think it's also a cultural term, as well as a way to show that it isn't your normal modern Paganism (neither is Celtic Recon). Recon's work to bring back the actual beliefs and worship of our ancestors, rather than just picking what each individual likes and using it. Hence the need for a title that shows the difference. It would take forever to type out - Asatru/Germanic/Norse/Polytheist/Recon/P... Heathen just works a lot nicer. ;-)

Depends on what you mean by "rogue." If you're talking about a dashing and mischevious "trickster", there's a number in the Celtic pantheon - Manannan probably being the most well-known. If you're talking about someone who "goes bad" and sides with the forces of evil, Bres is the first to come to mind. I'm afraid nothing is really coming to mind as a Celtic "theives' deity."

I have googled it and all i can come up with is "Purcell's paternal grandfather was from Bergen, and his paternal grandmother a New York-born Irish-American" which means he is Norwegian. And she's half irish.

I remember loving a song that was assigned to a girl I knew to sing for a competition years ago. I looked up the lyrics, and sang it a few times, but did not keep it fresh in my mind. Some of my relatives/ancestors moved to Cuba from Europe after the slave trade was outlawed to avoid being thrown in jail but I can't find anyone in Northern Spain that has this name. The closest I can find is "Benavides". My sister says we are "creolle" or something like that from Northern Spain. Sorry for being so ignorant about my heritage...but I want to find out. Also when I went to Spain I noticed that I was white as hell as compared to other Spaniards ESPECIALLY in the south. I looked albino compared to them :) Please help...thanks.

There is this one song I heard on the television, it was a foreign chant that sounded like "Tulla mohnna gueilla" and the "gueilla" was repeated throughout, I had also heard a slower version but I have no idea what that song was called, If anybody knows the song I am talking about, please tell me. I have looked everywhere on the net for a list of the orchestra members and can't find any information. I would LOVE a list of all the artists if someone knows. But in particular the drummer.
